Social Media Information Removal

Social media has become an integral part of our lives. From sharing photos and connecting with friends to building professional networks, these platforms hold vast amounts of personal data. However, this convenience comes with significant privacy risks — and the need to control or remove personal information from social media has never been more urgent.

In 2025, social media platforms are not only used to share content — they are also using your content to train artificial intelligence models. Many platforms have updated their terms of service to allow the use of your posts, photos, and interactions for AI training. This makes it essential to understand your options for controlling, limiting, and removing your data.

Why Remove Social Media Information?

  1. Professional Reputation: Employers, landlords, and academic institutions routinely screen social media profiles. Removing inappropriate or outdated content can protect your opportunities.
  2. Privacy and Safety: Personal information shared on social media — such as your location, daily routine, or family details — can be exploited for identity theft, stalking, or social engineering attacks.
  3. Mental Health: Exposure to online negativity, cyberbullying, or the pressure to maintain a curated online image can significantly impact mental health.
  4. AI Training Data: In 2024-2025, Meta (Facebook/Instagram), X (Twitter), and other platforms began using user content to train AI models. By removing or restricting your content, you limit how your data is used.
  5. Legal Rights: Under Swiss law (FADP) and EU law (GDPR), you have the right to have your personal data deleted from platforms that process it.

General Tips Before You Start

  • Download your data first: Before deleting anything, download a copy of your data from each platform. Most platforms offer a data export feature in their settings.
  • Save evidence if needed: Take screenshots of any content that may be needed as evidence (e.g., for harassment cases or legal proceedings) before deleting.
  • Opt out of AI training: Check the AI/data training settings on each platform and opt out if available.
  • Search engine caching: Removing content from social media does not remove cached versions from search engines. Submit separate removal requests to Google/Bing.
